Shane McGrath is the Director of SGM Consulting.

Shane is a professional civil engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia, Chartered Professional Engineer and an Executive Member of the Australian National Committee on Large Dams.

Shane is an engineer with over 30 years experience in the rural water industry. He has been primarily involved in executive management for operation and maintenance of assets and project management and construction activities for major water supply works, particularly dams, both in Australia and overseas.

For ten years Shane managed Goulburn-Murray Water’s dam improvement program and also had responsibility for the delivery of all other major projects within the organisation.

Shane has had a leadership role in the development of risk-based programs for dam upgrades in Australia and established the first full Alliance in the public sector in Victoria for the Eildon Dam upgrade project. He also led the selection process for the very successful FutureFlow Alliance for upgrading irrigation infrastructure in Northern Victoria.

Shane was a member of the working group for the Australian National Committee on Large Dams (ANCOLD) ‘Guidelines on Risk Assessment’ (2003) and has an ongoing review role. He is Australia’s representative on the Dam Safety Committee of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD). Shane was a member of the working group that produced ICOLD Bulletin 154, “Dam safety management: Operational phase of the dam life cycle”.

Shane is a former member of the River Murray Water Committee of the Murray Darling Basin Authority and of the project steering panel for the program to upgrade Hume and Dartmouth dams.

Shane was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2000 – “International Practice and Use of Risk Assessment in Dam Management”.
